Athenry AC’s very own iron lady, Valerie Glavin, topped off a fantastic year on Saturday last with a well deserved win in the inaugural Clonakilty marathon. Valerie’s recent spell of strong training stood to her well on a difficult hilly course that was just cleared of snow and ice in time for the event to go ahead. Valerie described the course as being one of the toughest she had ever run, but she managed to be first past the post in 3:19:12, just ahead of the evergreen Mary Jennings and Mary Sweeney. All three women had run at the front of the field for the entire race.

Everyone at the club will be delighted that Valerie has topped off 2010 in such great style and it’s surely a sign of great things to come in 2011.

Well Done Valerie!

Val,

Not alone did you win but to beat both Marys is something to really tell the grandchildren about - both true legends of Irish running.

Legendary status is not too far off for you, youself, on this sort of form...

Fair play!

As the legendry coach Jumbo Elliot once told Ronnie Delaney, 'Winning is winning, coming second is nowhere!'

I know you're up in cloud nine saying, London 2012, here I come. No, James nothing to do to with you.

Did you bring me back a bit of black pudding from Clonakilty!!!!
