Congrats to all who took part in the Marathon, Half Marathon and 6 Mile runs in Limerick today. For some it has become an annual event and for others their maiden voyage! Torrential rain was reported in Limerick overnight but the forecast this morning was promising and it delivered! The rain held off for most of us and we experienced glorious sunshine (some said they would have preferred the rain!). It was very warm! There were a few casualties as the race progressed and a number of athletes had to walk to get to the finish line, it was all too much. Some said it brought back memories of Dublin City Marathon in 2014. All good things must come to an end and just over 2 hours after the half marathon started the heavens opened on the rest of the field including the 6 milers who were soaked! There was great support from the locals who turned out in force. I even saw a Garda giving one of the athletes a high five! Small children with containers of jelly beans and wine gums were interspersed along the route. Water stations were well manned and every one a welcome sight!
There was representation from the club in the 3 distances. 6 Mile Run - Donal Leahy improving on last years time and Caoimhe Madden. Half Marathon - Sheila Kelly finished very strong in 1.57.53 (PB), Orla McCluskey, Anne Lyng, Frances Leahy, Caroline Mitchell, Marie Finn and Assumpta King all crossed the finish line. Jim Leahy, Valerie Glavin and Martina Passman completed the Marathon. Jim in preparation for Portumna 100km in June was just clocking up the miles but finished in a very respectable time of 3.38.39! Well done Jim! Esther Leahy our main supporter cheered us on enthuastically during the race and was also at the finish line to congratulate us. Thanks Esther! It was a great event and a great day, one I would definitely recommend!
