A gang of Athenry AC competitors hit the track in Dangan last night to compete in the Galway Track and Field Competition. The brave souls were Pearse Hunter, Iain Shaw, Philip Magnier, Peadar Nugent, Anne Hunter, Kellie Burke, Assumpta Feeney and Marie O’Connor.
The evening was a fun-filled one and saw County medals head for Athenry. Kellie was the first member of the team to acquire one, winning bronze in the 800m race. In doing so the pressure was on the rest of the gang. Assumpta stepped up to the plate and was like a gazelle out of the blocks picking up the second bronze of the night in the 100m race. Marie O’Connor was next up, winning silver in the senior division of the 100m race and Iain rounded the night off bringing home silver in the Master’s 100m.
Thanks must be given to Iain for giving the ladies a crash course in starting blocks, batons and yellow boxes. The evening was finished off with a 4 x 100m relay race where the ladies made up a team and finished third.
Thanks to the organisers for providing an excellent opportunity to test our sprinting skills.
