NUI Galway in conjunction with Sports Med West will host a Strength and Conditioning sports conference on Saturday 13 January 2007 in the Dangan Sports complex. Dr. Pat O’Neill, incoming Dean of the Irish College of Sports Medicine, will open the proceedings.
International speakers on the day will include Dr. Lee Browne, President of the National Strength and Condition Association (N.S.C.A) of America, which is a 20,000 member organisation. Topics covered will include strength training for young athletes and maximising performances in female athletes.
Mr James O’Toole, Sport Med West and NUI Galway’s sports medicine specialist, and Mr Ger Hartmann International, Sports Injuries Clinic, will also address the audience on the current status of Irish Sports Medicine. Mr O’Toole said “It is hugely important that we address the repetitive injury pattern in Irish sport and ensure our young athletes are getting the best advice currently available in the international sporting world”.
The conference will also include the setting up of an Irish Strength and Conditioning Association where existing members of the N.S.C.A. of America will be eligible for election to the new committee.
