Next Sunday will see the resumption of serious cross-country action in County Galway with the Galway Senior, Intermediate, Novice and Veterans Championships all up for decision as well as a range of competitive juvenile races. The Galway County Board have agreed to revamp the County senior championships this year and consequently all of the adult championships will be decided within a single race. This change has been made to ensure a larger, more competitive, more enjoyable race for all concerned.
Athletes can enter in whichever of the categories applies to them prior to the race and the finishing positions in each championship will worked out once everyone has completed the race. There will also be a team element to this year’s event, which will be decided very simply on the basis of the first four men or three women past the post for each club. The men’s races will be over 8k with the women tackling half that distance.
In another welcome innovation athletes from outside the county have been welcomed to take part in this year’s race, although obviously only Galway athletes will be eligible for awards in the Galway Championship races.
The programme of races in Tuam starts at 01:00pm and the first races on the ‘card’ are the County juvenile races at U10/12/14/16/18.
