Now in the 40th year, the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon took place on Sunday. 15,149 athletes ran the 26.2 miles (42km) through the streets of North West England. The weather was reported to be very pleasant. It was dry and the sun broke through the clouds throughout the race. A large contingent of runners travelled from Athenry AC to run as race organisers describe a "super fast course" and it is also considered to be one of the flattest marathon courses in the UK!
Mens Results:
Steven Bayton, Hallamshire Harriers won the race crossing the line in 2:22:34, and a half minute behind Kevin Rojas from Brighton & Hove AC took second place 2:23:03. Nathan Kilcourse, Salford Harriers was third clocking 2:25:08.
Women's Results:
Finishing 81st over all and winner of the ladies race was Kelly Crickmore of Stockport Harriers completing the distance in 2:48:04. Samantha Amend of Belgrave Harriers took silver in 2:52:07 with Anne Holyland from Wreake Runners finishing only 2 seconds securing third place in 2:52:52.
Athenry AC Results:
First Athenry man home was Gearoid Rohan finishing 137th overall getting a PB in the process 2:52:32. Jane Ann Meehan was first Athenry lady to cross the line in 2:55:32. Majella Cummins and Jacquie Lynskey ran the 2 person relay and Jacquie ran a PB 2:08:57 for her half. Caroline Freeney ran the marathon and achieved a 2 minute PB completing the race in 4:33:01. Another PB from Marguerite Wilkinson finishing the marathon in 3:53:37. Performance of the race has to go to Maeve Noone running a 9 min PB giving a finishing time of 3:18:52. In addition Maeve finished 8th in her age category. As a result of her outstanding performance Maeve has the honor of writing the race report which will follow shortly! Watch this space!
