There seems to be something about Craughwell that brings out the best in Athenry members as once again the results were littered with PBs.
Jane Ann Meehan reconfirmed her position as probably the top female runner currently racing in Galway, taking the win with a commanding 5min gap to second place, running a 60.18 for a big PB & a staggering 5 minute improvement on last year. GCH completed the podium with Grainne Ni Uallachain & Sinead Brody.
At the head of proceedings Mick Clohisey once again romped home with a two minute gap back to Matt Bidwell, winning in 49.29 & taking nearly a minute of last year’s time. Matt will also be happy with his race, gaining a position on his third place last year & also improving by two minutes over the course of the year.
Within the club, Ray Somers reasserted himself in the speed merchants' hierarchy, finishing in a time of 58.04 for a one min PB & a near two min gap to Gearoid Rohan who ran a near five min PB with a 59.48. It was a similar story right down through the list of 55 members who took part as a large selection of the club ran PB,s including David Meehan, Pat McDonagh, Chris Deakin, Mick Duane, Martin O’Hara, Maeve Noone & Mary Rohan amongst others.
After running 30 miles on Saturday & 12 miles Sunday morning, Jim Leahy took to the start line alongside partner Frances & paced her to a 1.29.50, to dip under the 90mins for the first time.
Congrats to all from Athenry AC who again did the club proud at a neighbouring club's big race day!
