Athenry juvenile athletes were well to the fore in the 2014 Western Championships held on a lovely warm afternoon on 14th June at Sligo IT.

Pride of place goes to Evan Quirke who took gold in both the U18 High Jump and Long Jump. Brandon Lee won gold in the hurdles with a very emphathic victory and took a fine silver when winning his heat of the 200m very impressively and only lost out on another gold by a quicker time in the other heat. Ufuma took silver in the 80m sprint, and Adam Reilly won a fine bronze with an impressive performance in the U13 High Jump. Freya Bohan won gold in the sprint and  also took bronze in the High Jump. Aoibhe Deeley won her heat in t he hurdles with a very strong run and in a large field with several heats took the bronze medal. while Sarah Gilhooley did really well finishing third in hurdles and fourth in long jump. Aubrey O'Brien won bronze in the long jump while Dean treacy took bronze in the high jump

Hazel Bichard, Katy Brogan and Jessica Reilly all performed very well on the day as did Ruairi Collins with a strong run in the 600 metres. Shannen Lee also took gold in hurdles and suffered a minor injury in the 1500 metres which surely deprived her of a second medal after some very strong runs recently. Mathew Treacy also medalled in the hurdles.

Well done to all our super athletes !
