Record crowds for fourth Tonabrucky Challenge

Over 400 runners, joggers and walkers took to the roads of Rahoon to compete in the 2014 Tonabrucky Challenge on Saturday evening 7 June. The 6km fun run which is organised by Rahoon Newcastle Hurling Club brings runners and walkers together to raise money for a nominated charity each year. The 2014 race was held in aid of On The Road Again (OTRA) and the Rahoon Newcastle Hurling Club.  OTRA is anon profit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of people by engaging them in walking and running as a means to build confidence, strength and self esteem. The World Health Organization defines health as Physical, Mental & Social, OTRA encapsulates all these ideals.

In a field of 250 runners, Martin Hegarty claimed the title of Tonabrucky Challenge 2014 winner in a time of 22:30, with Esther O’Flaherty running home in 24:52 and Rahoon Newcastle Hurler Colin Hanbury was the first clubman home in a time of 23:53.

“The steep and hilly course provides a tough and exciting challenge to all runners and for our walkers. There is no race or course like it and each year we get people coming back to try and conquer those hills and beat their times,” said race organiser Lisa Regan.

This years race was sponsored by 37 West and saw over 150 children take part in the activities throughout the day. For more information and race times log onto www.rahoonnewcastle.com.
