The 2010 Galway Triathlon Club lecture series will kick off next week with a talk by club coach Ray Glynn on training programs. This will be a great way to plan your pre-season training and get motivated.  It will also be an excellent oppotunity for new members to come along and find out more about the club, and the exciting world of triathlon.



The lecture series is open to all athletes involved in the sports of swimming, cycling, running, and triathlon.  It is designed to give you the best advice on how to train, and race to the best of your ability, whether you are a seasoned athlete or a total beginner.



Monday January 11 will see the first lecture take place at 7pm in the Radisson hotel.



The presentation covers a wide range of subjects from setting of triathlon goals, race selection, planning, and a broad training schedule. It will also provide advice on how to structure your training and racing season. The lecture will be followed by a meet and greet session for beginners/newcomers and a Q&A session.

The complete series is as follows:



2) Going Long



An open-fourm with Athenry ACs ultra distance runner Mick rice, Multiple Ironman competitor Reilly Dibner, and stage race cyclist Nigel Forde.  This session will be chaired by club coach Ray Glynn and will give an insight into long distance racing in the areas of running, cycling, and triathlon.  This will be a great opportunity to ask all the questions you have ever wanted to ask about the leap from sprint distance triathlons to ironman races, or the training and dedication involved in long distance cycling and running.

3) The Front crawl



Galway city swimming coach Andrew Lally goes through the theory and mechanics of front crawl swimming stroke. This is a chance to find out how and what makes us glide more gracefully, swim more efficiently, and leave the water refreshed.



Venue: Radisson hotel, Monday February 8, 7pm.

4) New to Triathlon, Beginners day



Training and Preparation for your First Race . A lecture for all who are new to triathlon or considering taking up the sport.  The day will tell you all you need to know about getting started in triathlon, and all the theory and skills you need to know.  More details to follow

5) Sports injuries treatment and prevention.



Sports therapist John Butler will give a talk on what to do to prevent injury, and what to do if those dreaded injuries occur to get you back on track.



Venue: Radisson hotel, Monday February 22, 7pm. tbc

6) Core and strength training for triathletes.



 A Lecture explaining the rationale of strength training by Sarah Thornton,. This talk will also include an outline of the importance of flexibility and stability in a strength programme.

7) Basic Bike Maintenance.



Well-known local cyclist and Bike shop owner Nigel Forde will conduct a demonstration on basic bicycle maintenance for all levels of cyclist.



Venue: Nigelโ€™s Cycle Store, Liosbaun. Monday March,  22, 7pm

All talks will be held at 7pm in the Radisson, apart from the bike maintenance talk which will be held in Nigels Cycle Store on the Tuam Road.  Each



session will cost โ‚ฌ2, or โ‚ฌ10 for the series.
