Freya Murray of Scotland has confirmed she will compete at the Loughrea 5 mile road race due to take place on the 27th September. The UK champion over 5000m will travel over from Edinburgh the day before the race and will stay at the Loughrea Hotel and Spa in preparation for the race.

Recently crowned Great Yorkshire Run 10km champion Murray surprised not only herself but the opposition when scoring a thrilling victory and taking another step forward in her bid to follow in the footsteps of her world class Scottish predecessors Liz McColgan and Yvonne Murray with the best win of her career and held off the challenge of former world cross country champion Benita Willis.

Murray won the 10 kilometres race in a personal best time of 32 minutes 28 seconds.

"This is my first proper 10km on the roads, I felt really good today, it all just went to plan." Murray said after outpacing Willis in the 400m after her more experienced rival tried breaking her in the final kilometre.

Murray winner of this year's UK 5000m title but whose time was not quick enough to qualify her for the recent world championships in Berlin, believes if staying injury free she can realise her true potential.

Murray looked to have made her initial breakthrough 12 months ago but her ambitions were put on hold when missing the European Cross Country and World Championships through injury.

"I'd really like to make them and run well there this time," Murray who works in Newcastle competes for local club Chester-le-Street, admitted.

"I'm looking forward to running in London next week (where she clashes again with Willis in the Capital Run over 5km) and then I'm going to go over to Ireland and run in Loughrea."

“This is a huge boost to have such an athlete such as Freya Murray compete at the Loughrea race” said David Reilly secretary Loughrea AC.

“I have been working hard with US based company Boulderwave to try and secure a big name for the race. It all worked out for us and I would like to thank them for there hard work put in over the past few months”.
