Another Great Night Out At The ‘Streets’

Galway City Harriers hosted another superb edition of their flagship ‘Streets of Galway’ 8km Road Race under the sponsorship of FUTUR€. It was a perfect evening for running and there was a huge contingent of Athenry AC runners taking part.

An incredible SIXTY EIGHT Athenry AC singlets passed under the finish line on the night, which was a huge vote of confidence in the race from the Athenry membership. A full breakdown of the Athenry AC finishers and their times is given below for your delectation. Full results are at http://www.galwaycityharriers.com/juvenile-information/streets-galway-2009-team-results-prizewinners. When all of the running was done many of the Athenry runners retired to the 'Al Muretto' Italian restaurant to refresh themselves with good food and talk of races to come.

Whilst we’re all waiting for John O’Connor’s photographic art to arrive online, some fine photographs of the race, like the one above, have been posted online by photographer and runner Paudie Birmingham. Paudie tells me that while he ran, his wife took the pictures – surely a marriage made in heaven. Check them out at the URL below. If you would like one of the digital originals just email me and Paudie has said he’ll email them on through me without any problem. Thanks Paudie!

A Good Night For Our Fit4Life Group

Happy Faces Before The Race

Happy Faces Before The Race

Great credit is due to the many Athenry Fit4Life group who took on the challenge of the race for the first time and came through flying the Athenry colours. There was something special about seeing so many happy faces in maroon and white singlets at the starting line.

Brian Bruton was the first Athenry man home, posting a superb time of 26:55 for 14th place. Brian has had his share of injury problems over the last 12 months and it was amazing to see him run so well and post such a strong personal best performance. First woman home in Athenry colours was the irrepressible Jane-Ann Healy who has been pounding the track in Dangan for many weeks now and it has obviously paid dividends.

Brian Bruton - A Fantastic Result

When the numbers were crunched and the results were produced it was tremendous that the Athenry Women’s team had claimed the top spot in that division. Jane Ann Healy, Elaine Walsh and Eimear Butler edged out GCH and Raheny Shamrocks to claim top spot. The men’s trio of Brian Bruton, Mick Rice and Alan Burke took third place in the men’s competition, this time behind Raheny Shamrocks and GCH. As far as I know this is the first occasion that Athenry AC have featured amongst the prize winners in either the men’s or women’s team competition and so it is an impressive achievement for both teams to make a breakthrough this year.

Mick Rice also picked up first spot in the men’s over 40 division.

Aside from those taking part and supporting runners there were also a small number of Athenry members who worked on the race as volunteers and their contribution did not go un-noticed. It’s always a treat to have a race volunteer shout ‘Come On Athenry!” as you pass by.

Everyone at Athenry AC wants to pass on their congratulations to the race organisers in Galway City Harriers on producing another fine race and we hope they’ll join us next St. Stephen’s Day in Athenry when we hope to return the compliment as hosts for the day.

...for supporting our race in such great numbers - truly a tribute to the great work ye guys are doing for athletics in Athenry AC.

Thanks also to Mick Rice for penning such complimentary words on the race itself. It was our pleasure to host Athenry AC and all the other athletes on the night.

Great running folks!

Yours in running,
