The accompanying image sees Westport 5k race winner Martin Conroy (Sligo AC) leading 2nd placed Robert Malseed (Mayo AC).
The Westport 5k was the final race in the C&C Cellular Mayo AC Road Race League organised by Mayo AC in conjunction with Mayo Sports Partnership. There was a fine turnout of 137 on a perfect day for running, cold but clear. Martin Conroy (Sligo) finished in 15.40 and was the clear winner of the race showing the excellent form he displayed in winning the 8th race - Hollymount 10k - in November. Robert Malseed was the best of the Mayo AC runners finishing in second place. Caitrona Jennings (Rathfarnham WSAF) the 2007 race winner, won again in fine style improving her time by three seconds to finish in 18.00. Mayo AC's Mary Gleeson, who decisively won the Race League title for the second year, was second in 19.30, just ahead of Ann Lennon in 3rd in 19.52.
There was a good spread of clubs among the category winners in the League, David Corcoran (Civil Service) M40, Ronnie Naylor (Mayo AC) M50, Cindy McCarthy (Sligo AC) W35, and Máire T Beatty (Athenry AC), who won a close battle with Bernie Kelly (GCH) and Mary Naylor (Mayo AC), in the W45 section. So as the year ends, the curtain came down on another very successful Road League.
