Caltra hosted the 5km Series this year for the first time and all credit due to them! It was very well organised. There was a warm and friendly atmosphere as the locals turned out in force to support the event. The weather was perfect! Blue skies and sunshine and the temperature was just right!!
There was a feeling of trepidation from some of us but we quickly reassured ourselves on hearing the rumours of a flat route - we were not disappointed! It was a lovely route, although a bit congested at one stage along a narrow section of the road (we were forewarned about this prior to the race starting). Approx 85 maroon singlets and 571 athletes in total gathered at the start line to run one lap of a figure of 9 (or 6!) finishing in the village of Caltra.
There were a few PB reported (and it's possible there were more!) Donna Lane 23:52, Dave O'Sullivan 19:19, and following a trojan race in his first 5km Series Mike McDonagh secured a PB of 26:50! Kieran Walsh 18:25. David Meehan was the first Athenry home in 17:23, Fabian Mangan finished a half minute behind in 17:53. Deirdre Brophy was the first Athenry lady home clocking 19:32 and Caroline Moore behind Deirdre finished in 20:43. Congrats to all!
And next week we are off to Craughwell. This is always a popular leg of the series. See you there!
