Galway County travel to Tullamore this Sunday June 15th for Round 2 of the National Track & Field League with possibly it's strongest team selection this year or last in both Men’s and Women’s competitions.
Round 1 took place in Tullamore on May 18th. Galway Men currently sit in 3rd place of 11 teams in Division 1 while Galway Women currently sit in 4th place of 11 teams. With virtually a full squad available for this Sunday we look almost certain to qualify for the National League final in both categories. The League Final is the foremost team competition in senior track & field athletics in Ireland.
Athenry, Craughwell, Galway City Harriers, Loughrea and Tuam athletic clubs are all represented this weekend. The team welcomes Irish Olympian Olive Loughnane into the fold for Sunday's event where she will compete in the 1500m walk. Sean Breathnach, recently selected to Ireland’s European Cup team, Brendan Monaghan, Alan Burke and Mary Barrett all return having been unavailable for Round 1.
Daniel Moore, Daniel Loughnane, Tara Donnellon, Eddie Costelloe and Gregor Toohey all compete in this competition for the first time.
Many of our ever-presents return again to do battle, including 2.20 high jumper Igor Muntean and National Senior Champion in the javelin Mindugas Kurcenkovas. Mike Connerney, winner in Rd 1, also returns having thrown well at last weeks Leinster Championships.
Rebecca Nolan and Katelyn Duane both return having clocked up wins in Round 1, as does Aoife Touhy who contributed significant points on may 18th. Darragh O’Brien will again tackle the water jump after a successful debut outing. Paul McNamara competes in the 5000m.
Nicola Monaghan, Sarah Finnegan and William Finnegan have yet to miss a National League event while Maeve Curley and Eanna O’Cathain will compete in the West Region on Sunday but will hopefully return for the final on July 27th.
See link to timetable below. Please note that schedule usually runs well ahead of timetable so please be in Tullamore well in advance of your scheduled competition time. If anyone needs help with a lift please let me know.
