On Thursday June 21st 2007, the first annual Annaghdown 'Summer
Solstice' 10K road race will be held in scenic Annaghdown on the
banks of Lough Corrib. The race is attracting lots of attention
from far and wide, and if the recent success of the Galway 5K
series is anything to go by, the organisers are hoping for a
large turn out. The 5K series proved that Galway athletics is on
very sound footing with 100s of people turning out every Tuesday
evening in May. The weather co-operated for all the races, and
the Annaghdown organisers are calling in any and all favours to
try and guarantee the we'll have a repeat on June 21st.
There is also a free kids fun run which kicks off the evening at
6.30pm. This event begins at the start of the main race which is
outside of Annaghdown national school. It is approximately 1K
and, as with the main event, will finish at the Annaghdown Pier.
The 10K run starts at 7.30pm sharp. The cost is 12 Euro on the
day with a free T-shirt going to the first 200 entrants. The
course is certified and the event is AAI registered. It is one
anti-clockwise loop and is relatively flat. The roads will not
be closed to traffic so all athletes should obey the rules of the
road. The race is open to runners and walkers alike with prizes
in all the usual categories.
