Athenry Team Letterkenny 2006
Athenry AC had quite a day at the races in Letterkenny yesterday at the AAI National Half Marathon Championships. Led home by club stalwart Paul McNamara (1:07:48) in a superb individual third position the remaining Athenry team bunched well behind him. Brian OβConnor was next past the post in a highly competitive 1:17:01 and Peter Delmer completed the scoring in 1:18:50. Mick Rice was next past the post closely pursued by both our webmaster Alan Burke and Gary Doherty.
This is the first time since the reorganisation of the senior section of the club that we have secured team medals at national level and this success speaks volumes for the dedication and effort put in by the runners on the team.
Runners had all sorts of weather conditions to contend with and a course that combined fast flat sections with tough hilly parts on the double loop course. The relatively tough conditions were reflected in finishing times and the three Athenry scorers were in 3rd, 22nd and 32nd places respectively and all six team members placed highly in the large field.
We also send our congratulations to the local organising committee who put on a fine race and made it all well worthwhile making the effort to travel north.
