Athenry Juvenile Athletes had a great day out at the Galway even ages cross country championship in the lovely setting of Loughrea AC ground in Bushfield Loughrea recently.
First up were the U10 girls where we had very strong performances from Sophie O’Brien Zoe Griffin Aoife Wall Sadbh McDonagh, Laura Scanlon and Leonore Church. We also saw very promising athletes in Aoife Guiry Eabha Rohan, Aishling Cronnolly and Roisin Morris. Well done girls!
In the boys U10, Fearghus Deeley took top honours closely followed by Calum Healy and Finn McIntyre, all of whom won medals. We also had very strong running from Aaron O’Connor, Dion Long and Daragh Gilhooley.
The Girls U12 scooped the silver medal for team performance with four runners finishing in the top sixteen – Laura Kenny, Caitlin Mullen, Freya Bohan and Saoirse Healey, closely followed by Aoibhe Deeley, Ciara McDonagh Danielle Collins and Jessica Reilly. Super stuff girls –well done!
Not to be outdone then the boys U12 team took the bronze team medal with Ruairà Collins also taking individual silver medal. Well done to RuairÃ, Geordan Mangan, Adam Reilly Shay O’Connor, Callum Holly and Kieran Lyons – great stuff lads!
Athenry success continued in the girls U14 where the team took the silver medal – well done to Aisling Kenny, Sarah Gilhooley, Kathy Brogan, and Hazel Bichard who all ran really good races – well done!
In the Boys U14 event, Brandon Lee took silver while Christian Mullen also ran strongly to finish well up the field, while in the U16 Girls it was great to see Shannen Lee doing well and also taking silver.
Conditions were quite tough on the day with a strong wind blowing in from the west and some heavy showers. Thanks to Loughrea AC who as usual had their grounds in top condition for a very well run event.
