Event Date

The 19th of June 2016, Annaghdown Summer Run (Previously called the Summer Solstice race) has been a significant date in the calendar for runners for the past number of years.

This year’s race is the 10th Anniversary of the 10 Km run with the first 130 entrants will be treated to a special commemorative Annaghdown 10km medal. The medal is limited to the first 130 entries along with the usual race day t-shirt.

After the successful introduction of a 5km race last year, this year’s race is now an official AAI sanctioned run. All online registrations to the 5km will receive a technical t-shirt, limited availability on the day.

This year also sees a change in the start finish line of the Annaghdown race. Both races will start and finish at Annaghdown NS. The decision to move the finish line was taken to create a better atmosphere and offer more support to competitors at the finish line.

A large turnout is expected for the 10K & 5km along with the children’s 3km race. 2015 saw the 10k course record smashed by local Galway Runner Matt Bidwell, who triumphed in the evening sun in Annaghdown. Online registration is advised to avoid disappointment

Once again the parents of Annaghdown NS will provide the food and refreshments after the race with sandwiches and homemade treats a plenty. Nobody should be leaving the parish hungry on the day. Galway Bay FM will broadcast live from the event from 2-6pm.

There will be prizes awarded for the first 3 Senior Men & Women, first man over 40, 50 & 60, first women over 35, 45 & 55.

The course is flat & fast with numerous PB’s recorded over the years and is similar as before. For any new comers this means that it is still the one loop; anticlockwise though over numerous bends and scenic townlands. There are a few slight inclines but nothing too major. There is also the added attraction of running along the banks of Lough Corrib.

All proceeds from Annaghdown 3 km, 5 km & 10km races goes to the pupils in Annaghdown National School.

Directions

To get to Annaghdown from Galway, take the Headford road out as far as Regan’s of Cloonboo, take a left and go about 3 miles. Once you see the church you can start to look for parking. The organizers this year are trying to keep the start area free of cars so your help in this will be much appreciated. There will be more than adequate parking available in the area, but if you can do so, please car-pool to the event. If you are coming from the Headford side of the county, take a right turn at the Annaghdown sign, and follow the road for 2 miles or so.

If approaching from Tuam or Oranmore then leave N17 at Loughgeorge and follow signs for Annaghdown where you will cross the Headford Road and directions are as above.
